About Fact Checker

An AI fact checker that shows you the evidence.

Fact Checker is a free fact checker online for anyone who wants to know whether a claim, headline, news link or photo can be trusted before they share it. Instead of a one-word verdict, our AI fact checking tool gives you a credibility score and the findings behind it, so you can make the call yourself.

Why we built it

Fake news spreads faster than anyone can check it.

A screenshot, a forwarded message or an AI-generated photo can reach millions of people before a fact-checker has time to write about it. Most people don't have an hour to research every post, and many news verification tools either demand that time or hand back a bare "true" or "false" with no explanation.

We built Fact Checker to close that gap: a fake news checker that works in seconds, is free to use, and treats you as someone capable of weighing evidence. Fact Checker is an independent project, and it is not affiliated with any news organisation, platform or political group.

What you can check

One fact checking tool for claims, news and images.

Claims and headlines

Paste a statement, statistic or quote. Our news fact checker compares it against published fact-checks and credible reporting.

News links

Drop in an article or post link. The misinformation checker looks at who published it and whether the story holds up elsewhere.

Photos and AI-generated images

Upload an image and the AI detector checks for signs of generation or editing, and searches for earlier copies of the same picture.

Video links

Pro members can check supported video links. Wider video support is on the way.

How it works

How our AI fact checker builds a score

Every check runs through the same four signals. Each one is shown to you as a separate finding, so you can see exactly why a score came out the way it did.

  1. 01

    Source reputation

Who published this, and do they have a track record of accurate reporting or of spreading misinformation?

  2. 02

    Published fact-checks

We search Google Fact Check Tools for reviews already published by professional fact-checking organisations, such as a Snopes fact check or a regional fact-checker, and show you what they found.

  3. 03

    AI-generation signals

For images and media, our AI checker looks for the patterns that image generators and editing tools tend to leave behind.

  4. 04

    Earlier copies

A reverse search shows whether the same photo or story appeared before, which quickly exposes old images passed off as breaking news.

Our approach

A credibility score, not a verdict.

No fake news detector and no AI detector is right every time, and pretending otherwise misleads people. That's why Fact Checker gives you a score from 0 to 100 with the evidence attached. When the signals agree, you'll see a clear result. When they conflict, the score says so.

Who uses Fact Checker

Built for readers, researchers and classrooms.

Everyday readers

Check a forwarded message or viral post in seconds before passing it on to family and friends.

Journalists and researchers

Use it as a first-pass news verification tool to see which claims already have published fact-checks.

Teachers and students

Verify the sources students cite and teach fact checking with real examples, showing the evidence behind each score.

Community moderators

Spot recycled images and known hoaxes before they take over a group chat or forum.

Looking for an AI plagiarism checker? Fact Checker is not a plagiarism checker. An AI plagiarism checker or an AI detector for teachers compares essays against existing text and estimates whether writing was produced by AI. Fact Checker checks whether claims and media are credible. Many teachers use both: a plagiarism and AI checker for originality, and Fact Checker for accuracy.
What we stand for

Our principles

  • Show the evidence. Every score comes with the findings behind it.
  • Be honest about uncertainty. A thin or conflicting result is reported as exactly that.
  • Stay independent. We don't take sides, and we're not paid to rate any source up or down.
  • Keep it accessible. The core fact checker is free every day, with no signup required.
  • Respect your privacy. We use what you submit to run your check, and Free checks don't require an account.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Fact Checker a free fact checker?

Yes. The Free plan gives you 20 credits every day with no signup and no credit card. A text or link check uses 4 credits, a photo check 10 and a video check 20, so you can run five text checks a day at no cost. Pro gives you 400 credits a month.

How is Fact Checker different from Snopes fact check articles or Google Fact Check?

The Snopes fact checker team and other fact-checking organisations publish researched articles on specific claims, and Google Fact Check Tools lets you search those published reviews. Fact Checker uses Google Fact Check Tools as one of its signals: when a fact-checker has already reviewed your claim, we show you that finding. When no one has, we still score the content using source reputation, AI-generation signals and earlier copies of the media. Fact Checker is independent and is not affiliated with Snopes or Google.

Can Fact Checker detect AI-generated images?

Our AI checker looks for signs that a photo was generated or altered by AI and weighs them alongside where the image came from and whether earlier copies exist online. No AI detector is right every time, so we show the signals behind the score instead of a simple real-or-fake label.

Is Fact Checker an AI plagiarism checker?

No. A plagiarism and AI checker compares an essay against existing sources and estimates whether the text was written by AI. Fact Checker does something different: it checks whether a claim, headline, link or photo is credible. If you need a plagiarism checker, including an AI plagiarism checker free for students or schools, use a dedicated tool built for that job.

Can teachers use Fact Checker?

Yes, though not as an AI detector for grading essays. Teachers use Fact Checker to verify the claims, statistics and news stories students cite, and to teach students how fact checking works by showing them the evidence behind each score.

How accurate is the fake news detector?

Fact Checker gives a credibility score from 0 to 100, not a guarantee. When several independent signals agree, the score is a strong guide. When they conflict or the evidence is thin, the score lands in the middle, and that uncertainty is shown to you rather than hidden.
